With proper care and regular maintenance, a piano can last many generations. We’ve put together a list of tips which you may find useful.
Cleaning The Piano’s Case
First, dust the piano case lightly with a feather duster or similar item. Then, wipe the case with a soft, lightly dampened cotton cloth in the direction of the grain. Lastly, remove any excess moisture with a soft, dry cotton cloth, again with the grain.
Do not use ordinary household furniture care products as they may not be compatible with the piano’s finish. There are several products specially made for piano finishes. Please contact us for more information or if you would like to order.
Cleaning the Piano’s Keys
A soft, lightly dampened cotton cloth works best, but use separate cloths for the white and black keys. Dry thoroughly with a clean cotton cloth. There are special cleaning products available for cleaning piano keys. Please contact us for more information or if you would like to order.
When the piano is not being played, the keyboard cover should be used.
Cleaning the Inside of the Piano
Don’t! Only a professional should do this! Many delicate parts could be damaged!
Regularly Scheduled Maintenance
Your piano should be inspected and serviced at least once per year. Since pianos contain lots of wool felt, they are very attractive to moths and rodents. Pianos neglected for several years can become infested by these critters and severely damaged or rendered useless.
Other Recommendations
To keep humidity and temperature levels stable, we strongly recommend that you position your piano away from:
- Outside walls, doors and windows
- Direct sunlight (use curtains, shades or blinds if necessary)
- AC or heating ducts
- Fireplaces
- Radiators
Keep all plants vases, drinks, or anything to do with liquid off the piano. Any kind of spillage on or into the piano’s inner mechanism can result in irreversible damage or ruin the finish.
Hope these piano care tips help!
