We no longer do piano moving, but can offer suggestions for those looking to do so.
Local Piano Moving
For local moves, hire a piano moving company rather than “Joe’s pick ’em up and drop ’em off.” Most damage to pianos occurs during moving, and cabinet repairs tend to be expensive, so go with someone skilled in handling pianos. Be sure to photograph your piano from all angles prior to pickup and inform the mover that you did so.
Once the piano reaches its destination, check it thoroughly for damage and if any is found, file a claim promptly.
Long Distance piano Moving
There aren’t many good choices for long distance piano moving, so we recommend the following strategy:
- Photograph and document the condition of the piano as mentioned in the local moving section above.
- Hire a reputable long-distance moving company, and add the piano to your homeowners policy. Movers typically only insure by weight, and that seriously undervalues your piano.
- Hire local piano movers on both ends of the move to load and unload the piano safely. If at all possible, have the piano placed on the truck right behind the driver.
- Buy or rent the proper restraining devices and have the piano movers secure the piano to the truck.
- Check thoroughly for damage at the destination point.
