Unlocking the soul of your piano
What is Voicing?
Voicing is a treatment conducted on the hammers of the piano which affects the hardness and texture of their felt layers. When pianos come from the factory, they often receive a basic level of voicing – mainly to ensure that the tone is relatively even throughout the keyboard.
As a piano is played, the hammers’ felt layers begin to compress and create a more strident tone. Of course, the sound of the keys that are most often played begin to “stick out.” The effect is one of unevenness and sometimes harshness. Careful voicing can even out the volume of each note and bring out the full tonal beauty of your piano.
